What Are You Watching?

The kids use the television more than I do, so usually it's their shows running, but recently they've discovered Avatar: The Last Airbender so I've been enjoying rewatching those. It's a new layer of fun when I get to experience someone's reactions to seeing things for the first time when I already know what will happen. The kids are also very open with their excitement, so I've been having a blast.

What are you watching these days?

My sibling and I watch a lot of anime. The only one I remember the name of (my sibling has the list) that we are currently watching is The Holy Grail of Eris.

I'll admit I haven't watched much anime. Not a personal preference thing, it just wasn't mainstream enough before the kids for me to know where to find it (I wasn't allowed many shows at all growing up, and was trying to catch up on everything), and now that I do have kids time is the limiting factor. 😿

I have been watching anime in various ways since the 90s.

I watched Sailor Moon on TV in the early 90s…then I found a bunch of VHS in my mother's cabinet which was anime for adults. I think she bought them (second hand, since they were taped) from someone else thinking they were for kids but then realized that they weren't and never showed them to us….but I watched them myself as a kid lol. A couple of them like Silver Fang was in Swedish…but a couple were in English and I didn't fully understand them then. (I was 9-12 years old)

In the late 90s I got online and learned about anime. XD; I bought VHS tapes over the internet then. Then in the early 00s, I recommended anime VCL disks and later anime DVDs as well as manga to the local bookstore and got an employee discount from them for my recommendations. XD

Now we stream anime and it's my sibling that do the recommending to me. XD; I mostly just read now.

Sure!

They're currently on a My Little Pony kick, with occasional breaks for How to Train Your Dragon. My oldest doesn't like high-tension shows (she hides from Nemona even) but my youngest doesn't mind. They like Pokemon and The Dragon Prince / Mystery of Aravos, which is about as close as they've gotten to actual anime.

Can they read subtitled anime, or do they need them in English?

How old are they? (I said 10-15 because I don't remember. ^^;; )

How much violence/nudity are you okay with them seeing? ("Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" has a lot of different age ratings depending on the country and if it's watched with an adult. But it's very high tension so might only be fine for your younger one anyway (if you're having a watch party with only her) but it's reaaaally popular among kids here in Sweden. "Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord" is low tension (cozy) but I don't know if it has been translated yet since it's so new (came out this season and is still going).)

They're turning 7 and 9 this month. They can ready subtitles but get frustrated if they go by too fast or use bigger words they haven't learned yet so English is probably still better. They'd done okay in shows where there were small sections of speaking another language but get frustrated if those sections are too long before switching back to English.

They're okay with violence as long as it or its aftermath are not too graphic on screen. They're used to their shows glossing over death unless it's a major plot point, and I don't think any of their shows display blood come to think of it, but they're used to Dan watching shows like Grimm which use tricks like the old Hitchcock movies, where shadows and blood splatter and sound paint the picture of what's happening just off camera and boy is it something bad. They have labeled his shows "killing shows".

Nudity, they'll scream with kid excitement about butts or boobs but get upset about seeing a guy from the front and lose interest in the show entirely if it's sexual nudity. We've done age-appropriate sex ed at home so they know what's going on and have decided together that they don't want to watch it in their shows.

Then they are a bit too young for Demon Slayer I would say. I would put at least 10 year old on it with an adult. (though, when the movie ran at cinemas here it was 7 year old with an adult. But I think that's too young. It's rated 15-18 without an adult in some countries.)

Sibling has a couple of suggestions.

One is "Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun" I have only watched some episodes here and there (my sibling has watched all of it) it is rated a bit higher in different countries but my sibling says that it should be fine if you are watching it with them. There are some mild sexual topics and violence but it should be fine.

"Yokai Watch" is for kids, it's PG in most countries and is similar to pokemon. I haven't watched it myself (maybe the first episode years ago) so don't have much to say about it. XD;

"D.N.Angel" is also a suggestion. I did watch it a veeery long time ago but don't remember much. My sibling say that they watched it as a child. It's a romance though so it might not be fun. XD

"Magical DoReMi" is for kids too. It's a magical girls one so it might be fun. 🙂 I think I watched a bit of it too but I don't remember anything from it. XD

"Little Witch Academia" is also for kids, it's apparently very popular right now. I haven't seen it at all. or heard about it. XD;;

My sibling says that the ones they recommend the most is "little witch academia" and "yokai watch".

Aaaah! My sibling just remembered another anime!! We really liked it, and I'm gonna rewatch it! My sibling said to warn you that your kids might want to become figure skaters after it, though. XD It's named "Medalist". It's about an 11-year-old girl who wants to become a figure skater, but she's "too old" and her older sister's skating career ended in an injury (if I remember correctly), so her mother doesn't want to let her. But she meets a former figure skater who agrees to become her coach. (he was also "too old" to become a figure skater when he started.) I think this one is a lot better than the other two. XD;;

rewatched 6 episodes yesterday! I still like it. XD;

Some episodes might be a bit too high-tension for your oldest one because of "family drama" (but it's overall very mild; it is more than what's usually around in a sports anime, though. The anime is pretty comical overall otherwise). But it always resolves within the episode.

In epsiode 6 there is also a death because of illness. But it's a death that happened a couple of years ago. It's a bit of the backstory of the coach. His family couldn't afford for him to practice ice skating. But he helped a woman out that fainted at a busstop and then she and her family helped him follow his dreams. But when she died he ran away from that family. ^^;

I finished the first season three days ago XD; (it's only 13 episodes) …and my sibling and I started watching season 2 yesterday. 🙂

The kids found it on Netflix the other day. She was debating it before eventually deciding on a magical girl style show instead.

Morgan Biscup Yeah, it's a newer show so it can be both harder and easier to find it. XD; (season 1 aired from January last year and season two aired from january this year. We finished the second season today. XD;; …but the second season was only 9 episodes. The start of episode 7 in season 2 was hilarious. My sibling said to tell you that my humor sucks so. XD;;

It looks like Medalist is on Hulu or Disney+ in the US. I haven't watched it in English, but the translation seems to be reasonably good. 🙂

Aaaa! One Piece, it is best for older teens. But my sibling watched it as a…mmm, maybe 10 year old. Or not watched it, read the manga.

Another one that kids can definitely watch is Case Closed/Detective Conan (on Crunchyroll). It's very old, but it's both for younger kids and adults. I still love it. XD;; …..it has over like…..1000 episodes. When I rewatch that one, I only rewatch the episodes that have my favorite character in it. XD;; lol.
